Time graph for Amy Bento's Kickbox Xtreme
It’s non-stop action with great transitions — you’ll smoothly flow from one combo to the next. Not for beginners, this explosive, rapid-fire choreography never lets up (Amy “cues as she goes,” no slowing down to demo a move). Moving way beyond static punches and kicks, Amy’s combos are wide-ranging and unusually varied (from spins and directional changes to plyo-jumps and traveling lunges). You also get an aerobic/anaerobic element; each series includes an extra-intense “power burst.” It all ends with ab sculpting. Requires an X-ertube and a step (only for the toning). Also includes some “pre-mixed” workout options. ©2006. DVD has: 7 premixes (37 to 57-min. alternate workouts), Chapter menus.

Amy Bento's Kickbox Xtreme

I don't recommend.
I feel like the moves in this workout are labored and not natural. It haunts the entirity of the workout segments- too much awkwardness and too little easy direction with complex moves. It is not impossible to do something mindless that results in something body-intensive and sweaty. I hate when workouts involve too much of your brain and too little of your body and the result is a frustrated mix of muscle/brain madness. This workout is like that - beware! PS Amy Bento is obviously talented and dedicated to fitness - her workouts are just poorly choreographed - posted by hatha on 11/17/2008
not impressed
this video foregrounded choreography that was wayy too complicated for what it was worth, heart-rate wise. Also, it hogged up way too much room (my living room is a reasonable size and I never had this problem with other workout dvds). There is just too much traveling to and fro and kicking and i just couldn't get over how frustrating the choreography was on top of that. Granted, I have only done this workout once, but I'm not compelled to do it again. I enjoyed Amy's 10 minute solution and was hoping for more of the same with other Bento videos, but perhaps I just missed the mark with this one. - posted by amy on 11/16/2008
Great!
This was a great video...yes its complicated at first but after two tries I was able to pick it up quickly. I really needed something that I could do at home and burn close to 500 calories....this was it. I did not get bored once! - posted by jillian on 11/9/2008
Amy, please don't pare down anything!
I think Amy has created a workout exactly for the targeted audience - those who love complicated choreography & harder workouts! I think the cuing could be better in the future, but I really hope she never makes simpler workouts. They are no fun to me - this is! I don't think this is always as hard, choreography- or intensity-wise as Hi-Lo Extreme, but if you put your all into it and do it a few times to get all the moves, you will get a great workout. The music is good, and she has so much darn energy! I would give this fewer stars b/c of the cuing, but I think I'll get it all down next time (only did it once). Awesome Amy! - posted by Nyx on 8/31/2008
Nice workout but too easy
I definitely enjoyed this workout but I was looking for something a bit harder. I am an advanced exerciser and I just found this to be too easy. Especially the last blast. It's just too long and my heartrate drops too much. It's a nice workout but I think it should have been rated inter/advanced. - posted by Adina on 8/14/2008
Love it!!!
I can only add to all the others as-AWESOME!!!! I have ordered several dvd's looking for something that really, really, gets you moving and this was it. I have the turbo jam which is good and Jillian Michaels cardio kickboxing. But this one is great. Amy keeps the beat going through out the video so you don't have to concentrate on what she is listening to and she let's you know what move is coming up next. This is definitely an advanced workout. I am exhausted when I finish but I feel great! Not to mention the pregnant lady really keeps you motivated. The moves are complicated at first but when you become more familiar with it then-look out-you will find yourself really getting into it. Love it!!!!! - posted by Annette on 7/28/2008
Major Calorie Burn!!
Wow, is all I can say about this upbeat, fun and energetic workout. She is non-stop throughout the entire workout. I love, love, love it!!! I can just feel the calories burning off whenever I do this workout. I feel great when I'm finished - lots of sweat!! But I love it!! - posted by Stephanie on 7/21/2008
Challenging and fun
I wanted a challenging kickboxing tape because the ones I have now are not getting my heart rate up like they used to. This one gets the job done. My average HR during this workout was 134. I agree that it is harder to follow the moves than in the other workouts that I love ( Powerstrike 2 and Cathe's KPC ) and Amy's form is not great, but with time I will get the moves down. I was glad to see an emphasis on kicks and other lower body work to get the heart rate up. Some kickboxing tapes go overboard on the punches which do little for a cardio effect. This is my first time working out with Amy Bento and I liked her personality - upbeat without being annoyingly perky. I did not have a chance to do the core work with the band so I cannot comment on that. Looking forward Amys's upcoming boxing workout that has simpler drill type moves. - posted by Leslie on 7/13/2008
All time favorite Kickboxing
I LOVE Cathe's KPC but this one is just as intense and maybe a bit more fun. I've done it several times now and the moves are enjoyable and easy to follow along with. I hope Amy comes out with another kickboxing video! I'd buy in a heartbeat! - posted by Jessica on 7/11/2008
Love, Love, Love Amy
Wow. Amy really packs a punch with her cardio workouts. I'm normally not overly thrilled with kickbox workouts with a hi/lo flare, but this workout is amazing. I love jump kicks and this one has plenty of them. It does take a while to catch on, but once you do Amy will kick your butt. Her form is lacking, there is no doubt about that, but there is no denying this is a fantastic cardio workout. Bring on more. - posted by Mel on 7/3/2008

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Premixes
X
These are alternate workouts created by the manufacturer. They use the same content as the main program (i.e. the very same video footage). But the sections are re-edited into pre-made alternative workouts that you select from a menu. These are often condensed versions of the main workout.
Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
