Time graph for Cathe's Basic Step & Body Fusion
You’ll get two full workouts and three "add-ons" - pure step aerobics, step aero/tone intervals and targeted toning. They’re all exceptionally well-designed and well-cued. Both step segments feature very smooth transitions and easy-to-follow combos (Cathe Friedrich gets her intensity from non-stop action and wide-ranging movements). The all-step workout is very do-able - interesting variations of just two combos. The interval program alternates progressively-more-challenging step-aerobics with circuits of classic muscle toning (e.g. squats, bicep curls, push-ups). Finally, each of the toning sections target just one muscle group with varied routines done at varied tempos. Requires at least three sets of dumbbells. A stability ball and X-ertube are used in the "add on" toning. ©2004. Not available in stores. DVD has: Chapter menus.

Cathe's Basic Step & Body Fusion

Great workout!
This workout is a great one to add to your library. Cathe has excellent cues and is a great motivator. The basic step is boring for the seasoned stepper. - posted by Sharae on 9/24/2008
Excellent introduction to Cathe and great workout
Sometimes I need a break from Cathe's advanced workouts and I reach for this. Choreography is easy and well-cued and a very good primer for those new to Cathe. I still get a solid workout without feeling wiped out. Cathe is always a sure bet when it comes to fitness DVDS. - posted by Hara on 7/22/2008
Great Beginner workout
This is a great beginner workout. It is not overly complicated, Cathe is great at giving cues, and you build a sweat. I think this is perfect for someone who would like to try step at home. I also really enjoy that you can break this dvd down, so if I want to make my workout longer I am able to. - posted by Dani on 7/3/2008
Love this one!
I have always wanted to try Cathe's workouts, but I'm not the most coordinated person so starting with basic step seemed logical. It's great! She's got good cueing but at the same time doesn't "overteach" so doing her video over and over doesn't become to slow. Love her attitude and like the previous reviewer says -- love that she cracks jokes! Very motivating! This one is becoming one of my favorites! - posted by M.K. on 6/12/2008
Beginners start here!
I had The Firm for years, and was looking for a change of pace. Cathe showed me that and so much more! I love ALL of Cathe's workouts, but some were just too hard at the time, so I started with this one so I could improve my fitness level for her particular type of workouts. I love how Cathe cracks jokes during the workout. No other exercise video that I have EVER purchased does that! I know for myself that I need a little more motivation DURING the workout, or I'm likely to give up. This is EXACTLY what Cathe provides for those doing her workouts! I LOVE HER WORKOUTS!!!! - posted by Vanessa on 3/23/2008
Great Workout for Beginners
I am in good shape, but haven't done step in years. I tried some of Cathe's more advanced videos and was blown away by the choreography of the step routines. Afraid to try again, this one has been gathering dust for months. Tried it today and LOVED it! Great workout but the routine was easy to follow. So much fun. This will definitely stay in my rotation. - posted by Ruth on 2/28/2008
body fusion
Well I've been doing advanced workouts but am totally new to step so I bought this video. I did basic step and barely felt it and got all the moves on my first try.. but I think next time I'll take the advice and add more risers and make it more intense. I went ahead and did body fusion after since I didn't feel I got the workout I wanted and I did raise it one level for that one. It was great! I did also use a bit heavier weights than what it seemed she was using. I may raise it one more level next time also. The moves were easy to catch on to but good. I will keep this one for body fusion. I am still a bit scared of the more andvanced step tapes with the complicated moves but after doing this one pretty easily I think I'll catch on! :) Cathe was also enjoyable to workout with. I usually only do her weight videos. - posted by Jess on 2/14/2008
My Favorite!
I love this workout. I have done it for a year now and it is a constant staple in my rotation. Good cardio and strength workout, hits all aspects of a good workout. - posted by Marsha on 2/11/2008
Awesome Video
Great video. Easy to follow and gives a really good workout. - posted by Leona on 12/12/2007
A Staple in my Rotation!
This is a tried and true staple in my rotation for 2 years now. Sometimes all I have time for is a 30 min workout and I know my heartrate will get up with basic step. Put a lot into the moves, add a riser or two and I am good to go! Body fusion is always good! Add a riser, up your weights for the toning and -never fail good workout! I don't tire of these routines because Cathe teaches in such a way that you don't get sick of what she says because it is all instruction w/o all the silly chitter chatter. She is a real pro imo! - posted by Tracy on 12/4/2007

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Step aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The step aerobics segments involve stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. These segments require a step bench platform. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
