Time graph for Kathy Smith's Flex Appeal Bellydance
A non-intimidating and very well-structured introduction to bellydance. You’ll learn the patterns in the slow/sensual warm-up, then use those motions in the faster-paced aerobic workout (as Kathy says, it’s “a hip-shakin’, calorie-burnin’, hot and sexy routine”). Assisted by bellydance professional Ansuya Rathor, Kathy’s moves range from basic hip circles and shimmies to more exotic “Camels” and “Umis” (moves that, surprisingly, work all areas of your body including your hips, abs and arms). You’ll finish with a unique stretch segment — a fluid blend of yoga, Pilates and dancers’ deep stretches. Includes a short one-on-one bellydance tutorial at the end. Traditional costumes and authentic Middle-eastern instrumental music. ©2004. DVD has: Chapter menus.

Kathy Smith's Flex Appeal Bellydance

If it were not for this workout, I would never have attempted Bellydance
First, Kathy is not trying to pretend like she is a professional bellydancer. She has collaborated with a pro and is teaching the basics and wanting to bring this art form to the general public. I have always loved Kathy's workouts, so that is why I tried this one. I would never have even considered bellydancing had it not been for this beginner workout by Kathy. I believe that is what her intention was for this workout. If you are a hardcore bellydancer, no you will not appreciate this workout. But, if you are like me, and just wanting to try something different, I believe you will enjoy this one. It is a great ab workout, and you will break a sweat. I did not realize bellydancing could be such a good workout. I am glad Kathy brought this workout to the general public. - posted by alivingroomathlete on 7/28/2008

I love this video
This is another hit video for me. In fact, I take this video(actually DVD) to work and when I go out of town. This is a good video when you want to excersise, don't have much time, and don't want to break a lot of sweat. I also will use this video prior to my strength training routine. - posted by watson on 1/7/2007
Not enough explanation
I am not happy with this tape. The moves are not explained well. I found it boring and overall has a dull feel to it. Kathy's voice is monotonous and she is stiff in the movements. - posted by Miami Resident on 9/27/2006
Not For Me
I tried this DVD for about 20 minutes and just wasn't into it. I'm sure it's fine if you're into belly dancing. I'll just stick to pilates and yoga for my abs - posted by Jill on 7/31/2006
One of the best Bellydance workouts I have
I agree with Jennifer's posting about it complimenting Dolphina's workout. The moves explained in the tutorial and workout make sense now to me as far as layering the moves. I think, in spite what a lot of reviewers think of this workout, that it is well instructed. No Kathy is not a bellydancer, but neither are beginners, and she doesn't claim to be one! She's not a boxer either, but no one criticized that. I almost didn't get this because of reviews here and on Amazon. The preview doesn't play well on the Collage site(slow, sluggish and dark). I don't get the criticism about Kathy on this. I am a little younger than she is, and appreciate that she tried to bring this out to encourage women to take a different route regarding fitness and her enthusiasm. She does say it is "a whole world away from weight training". I did this last night and again after, then did the moves as much as I could while blow drying my hair. I could see the tv from my mirror! And further, I think she picked one of the best instructors out there. - posted by Teresa on 6/30/2006
Good Start and Compliment
I enjoyed this dvd. I have Dolphina's Goddess Workout and this compliments it nicely. Although, if you've done belly dancing before follow the dancer's behind Kathy. It is easier to understand their moves. Other than that I felt it was a great beginner workout with the tutorial and breakdowns. - posted by Jennifer on 6/29/2005
Not bad (but not great)
Belly dance afficianados will HATE this workout, but it's not that bad. Kathy has a strong and enviable figure, however she is no belly dancer and she moves more athletically than fluidly. Therefore there's a certain stiffness to her instruction and you're better off watching the background dancers. The plusses The costumes are lovely, the music is ok, the whole package is professionally produced (typical of Kathy Smith) and it's a non-intimidating intro for those who want to dabble in belly dance and have fun. My main gripe I just wish for once she'd cool it on the enthusiastic A-HA's. They're annoying and tiresome in general but seem really uncalled for in a belly dance workout!! - posted by on 6/25/2005
A Gem of A Video - I loved It!
This is the first bellydance video that I've ever done. I really enjoyed working out with it. Kathy's cueing and instruction was superb and she and her crew seemed like they were having a really good time. This video really works your upper and lower body on all levels. I even broke a mild sweat. I loved the variety of abdominal and hip moves. The photography was beautiful and the music inspiring. Although, I would suggest that anyone with back problems review this video with thier doctor first before doing any of the exercises. This video is definitely a keeper in my fitness library. - posted by Millicent on 2/11/2005
A great introduction to belly dancing, and closed-captioned too
I had been wanting to try belly dancing for a while, but I couldn't find any instructional videos that were closed-captioned (for some reason, nearly all exercise video producers seem to think that people who are deaf or hard of hearing don't work out). This DVD, though, is captioned, which is serendipitous for me! I was finally able to really learn the basics and progress from there. As other reviewers have metioned, Kathy is a proficient belly dancer but not an expert; however, her enthusiasm comes through clearly, the fun she is obviously having is contagious, and the tutorial with Ansuya is quite helpful. Thanks, Kathy! I hope all of your other DVDs (past and future) will be captioned! - posted by Hannah on 1/23/2005
LOVE IT!
THis tape gets you sweaty. I felt great when i was doing it. very alive. You get more flexable. I gave it to my daughter-in-law and thought it would help her with her back problem. Now shes up and moving and back on track!!!!!!!!! - posted by Amber on 1/3/2005

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
