Time graph for The Firm: Cardio Overdrive
A solid interval program — the aerobics and toning are both fast-paced and “choreographed.” The fast pace keeps you burning fat; the choreography keeps you motivated (even the toning is constantly changing — no static, same-move repetitions). The four cardio segments vary in impact and intensity. They range from basic marches and step-touches to slightly-more-challenging sports and Latin dance moves. The two body-sculpting sections efficiently work your upper and lower body at the same time (always moving and always different). Led by Alison Davis. Requires 3 to 5 lb. dumbbells. ©2007. Note: Newly released as a separate DVD, previously only available in “The Firm TransFirmation” kit. DVD has: 1 premix (25-min. alternate workout)., Spanish option, Close captions, Region 1.

The Firm: Cardio Overdrive

I love this workout
I do this workout once a week and I sweat like mad. I like that the moves are repetitive since Alison does add on to each routine and for someone like me who is athletic but not 'dancy', the choreography is learnable. She has a pleasant manner and I believe she is enthusiastic about giving us a good workout. Am relieved to see that I didn't have to buy an equipment. I tend to avoid The Firm because I never have all the doodads they expect and don't have the room to store them all anyway. Thank you Alison for a great workout. - posted by Lucie on 11/6/2008

I never would of thought
I never thought I would end up buying the CARDIOWEIGHT SYSTEM,because I didnt' want to buy the pinks weights set.But after previewing this workout I bought the system with the 4 dvds(WITHOUT pink weights).I decided to write a review on each one seperately. I did premix and I must say Alison is a great instructor! She's right up there with Allie. The workout is fun with new moves and kept me sweating the whole time.If you're on the fence or maybe a loyal firmie believe me you'll enjoy this one. It's like the classics. - posted by Teri N. on 10/23/2008
Good Cardio Only Workout
As a fitness instructor, I watch many DVDs. I am a female over 40. This workout is a good cardio only workout and is easy to follow. It offers some high-impact moves for more intermediate to advanced fitness levels, but offers low-impact as well. This is a good workout for those new to exercise or over 40, but also offers some good high impact moves that would challenge the intermediate exerciser. There is very little strength training in this video and that portion is performed with very light (probably 1-2 pound) walking handweights. - posted by LisaW on 10/22/2008
A "Hare" style workout that's motivating
I agree with Britney--this a very good workout but some of the sections go on too long and get too repetitive. This seems to be the case with almost all of Alison's videos--good choreography and interesting moves, I just wish the cardio sections were about one minute shorter and another toning section was inserted. The music on this is very good and the balance of music to instruction was excellent (unfortunately the music is too low on many of the more recent Firms). I used 5 lbs but could up to 8 lbs. All in all a very good "hare" style workout. - posted by RuthNYC on 10/22/2008
Really Enjoyed the Variety!
I really enjoyed the variety of this video. It's like previous reviewers said - it's tough enough so that you feel challenged but not killing yourself. Although, it did take at least 2 times for me to do video before I got down all the moves as the transitions are pretty quick, but still enjoyed it. Allison's personality is sunny but encouraging. A definite winner! - posted by M.K. on 10/22/2008
New Interesting Moves!
Cardio Overdrive is a great workout! A lot of the moves are new and interesting. I've done this workout three times and I do work up a pretty good sweat with it. I really like Alison and I think she's right up there with Allie as far as instructing goes. I give this workout 4 stars instead of 5 simply because I do feel it could be a little more challenging. While I work up a sweat, I feel like I need a little something extra after doing this. To me, this is one of those "light day" workouts or something you do when you are dreading a workout. - posted by Lauren on 9/2/2008
Fun and fast paced workout
Loved this w/o. I did'nt hear bad cuing and I think Alison did a fantastic job. I like this one more than her ultimate fat burning. I felt the weight selection was just right for the pace of the movements. And as far as the repetition of the cardio...it was only like 5 minutes long. I've done programs where the cardio section lasted 10-12 minutes doing the same thing and going on and on. I'd rather do 5 minutes any day.My HR was up and I was glowing[as tamilee calls sweating]LOL.I wasn't too crazy about the cooldown; a little awkward for me. I'm glad I got this video. I found the moves and the music fun. A big 5 stars from me. - posted by Alexis on 8/29/2008
A Great Workout
I found this to be a really great workout. Originally I had planned on giving this DVD to my sister, but after doing it once I decided to keep it for myself! I agree that the moves are a bit repetitive but that does not make them any less fun. I also thought that the workout had great music. It was very motivating and so was Alison. She is one of my favorite FIRM Instructors. What I really enjoyed most about this workout was the four-limb work. Everyone has been saying it and I full heartedly agree. Even using light weights the moves leave you gasping for air. That is what I love about this workout it gives me a good sweat and keeps my heart rate right up till the cool down. It is a great workout. I give it 5 stars! Thanks Alison. Keep them coming. - posted by Emily on 8/13/2008
Overdrive - Yup, I'd Say So!
okay, I did the express. (which I'm deciding i'm not liking; i like the concept, but it would be nice if they were all together different excerise), than the full version, so now I can give a nice review. I like it. I like Alison. If you have Cardio Party you'll notice that the cardio section in that is the exact same in overdrive - until she goes to "Overdrive." This is a light sculpting dvd, it's Cardio - sculpting ('light weights only') - cardio - OVERDRIVE (more hi-impact like cardio) - sculpting. as others say, it is very repeative, it's mostly the same thing - which really doesn't bother me, because it gives one a chance to recover. this could very easily be something you can do on a lighter recovery day but you want to really make it count.. or just heavy up the weight and go for it, because you will sweat. this is something i'd come back to again :) 4 stars instead of five because the cardio COULD have been a bit more varied - or a little bit more... something. - posted by Sunny on 8/9/2008

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.
sample time graph
Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Premixes
X
These are alternate workouts created by the manufacturer. They use the same content as the main program (i.e. the very same video footage). But the sections are re-edited into pre-made alternative workouts that you select from a menu. These are often condensed versions of the main workout.
Spanish option
X
In addition to English, you can choose to hear the program in Spanish.
Region 1
X
This DVD is designed for US and Canadian DVD players. It will NOT play in most foreign country players.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
